📜 Deep History – From 1950 Road Races to Global Icon

The Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance was born in 1950 as a last-minute social addition to the Pebble Beach Road Races organized by the Sports Car Club of America. 🇺🇸 The very first show featured only about 30 cars on a practice tee near the Beach Club. The inaugural Best of Show was awarded to Sterling Edwards’ homemade 1950 Edwards R-26 Special Sport Roadster.

In 1952 the event permanently relocated to the dramatic 18th green of Pebble Beach Golf Links, overlooking Carmel Bay — the setting it still occupies today. Racing on the narrow public roads of Del Monte Forest ended after a fatal accident in 1956, but the Concours continued and steadily grew in prestige. It has been held every year since 1950 with only one exception (1960). Over seven decades it has become universally recognized as the world’s most prestigious collector-car show, regularly drawing entries from more than 20 countries. 🇮🇹🇩🇪🇫🇷🇬🇧🇯🇵

💰 Auction Powerhouse – 2026 Record Results

Monterey Car Week 2026 delivered the highest auction totals in history. Combined sales across the five major houses reached an unprecedented $747.9 million (Hagerty figure), with 844 of 1,124 lots sold (approximately 75% sell-through rate). The average sale price climbed to $866,107 — a 64% increase over the previous year. Modern supercars and ultra-rare competition cars accounted for a large share of the value.

Top 2026 Auction Results (prices include buyer’s premium):

1. 🇺🇸 1964 Shelby Cobra Daytona Coupe (chassis CSX2300) – $42,905,000 (Gooding Christie’s) New record for any American automobile sold at public auction. One of only six original Daytona Coupes and the only example personally owned by Carroll Shelby.
2. 🇮🇹 2026 Ferrari Luce ‘Tailor Made’ (charity lot) – $40,000,000 (RM Sotheby’s) Most expensive electric vehicle and most expensive charity lot ever sold at auction.
3. 🇬🇧 1996 McLaren F1 GTR “Pop Art” (chassis 10R) – $34,655,000 (RM Sotheby’s) New record for a McLaren and for any British-built car at public auction. Ex-Nick Mason (Pink Floyd); one of only two Short-Tail factory XP prototypes.

Other strong results included multiple modern and classic Ferraris (F50, 288 GTO, Enzo, F40, etc.). The highly anticipated 1962 Aston Martin DB4 GT Zagato went unsold, while the 1968 Porsche 907 Langheck (ex-Jerry Seinfeld) sold for $3.305 million, below its pre-sale estimate. Ferrari still occupied several top-10 positions, but the American icons and the McLaren provided the biggest headlines.

🏆 75th Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance

Best of Show was awarded to the 1935 Duesenberg SSJ Special Speedster (ex-Clark Gable), shown by collector Harry Yeaggy of Cincinnati. One of only two SSJs ever built (the other belonged to Gary Cooper), the car impressed judges with its elegance, provenance, and recent restoration to original black lacquer over saddle leather. It prevailed over strong competition that included important Ferraris and a Figoni et Falaschi Delahaye. 🇺🇸🏆

Hotel occupancy and rates reached peak levels months in advance. Traffic on Highway 1, 17-Mile Drive, and local roads was extremely heavy. 17-Mile Drive was closed to non-Concours traffic during the peak days. Shuttles and ride-shares were essential.
