Enzo Anselmo Giuseppe Maria Ferrari, Cavaliere di Gran Croce OMRI (Italian: [ˈɛntso anˈsɛlmo ferˈraːri]; 20 February 1898 – 14 August 1988), the iconic Italian motor racing driver and entrepreneur, left an indelible mark on the automotive world. Best known as the founder of the Scuderia Ferrari Grand Prix motor racing team and the Ferrari automobile marque, he was affectionately called Il Commendatore, Il Drake, L’Ingegnere (“The Engineer”), or Il Grande Vecchio (“The Grand Old Man”).

🏎️ Early Life:
Born on 18 February 1898 in Modena, Italy, Ferrari’s passion for racing ignited at the age of 10 when he witnessed Felice Nazzaro’s victory at the 1908 Circuito di Bologna. Despite little formal education, he served in the Italian Army during World War I.

🏁 Racing Career:
Joining Alfa Romeo’s racing department in 1920, Ferrari achieved his first Grand Prix win in 1923. After personal tragedies in 1923 and 1925, he transitioned into team management, founding Scuderia Ferrari in 1929. The iconic prancing horse emblem originated from Italian fighter plane pilot Francesco Baracca’s symbol.

🏆 Building Ferrari:
Alfa Romeo partnered with Scuderia Ferrari until 1933. Despite challenges, Ferrari’s team secured a remarkable victory at the 1935 German Grand Prix. The “great walkout” in 1962 saw key figures leaving, but Ferrari’s strategic moves led to successes with the mid-engined Dino racers.

🤝 Merging with Fiat:
Facing financial difficulties, Ferrari sold 50% of his company to Fiat in 1969, maintaining control of racing activities. Fiat’s holding eventually rose to 90% by 1988.

🏎️ Legacy and Final Years:
Ferrari’s autocratic management style fueled controversy. His focus on results sometimes strained relationships with drivers. Despite criticism, Ferrari’s Scuderia continued its success after his death. He passed away on 14 August 1988, leaving a lasting legacy in the world of motorsports.

💔 Personal Life:
Ferrari’s personal life included a reserved existence. Married to Laura Garello, they lost their son, Dino, in 1956. Ferrari later had a second son, Piero, with Lina Lardi.

⚰️ Death:
Enzo Ferrari succumbed to leukemia on 14 August 1988, at 90. His death, timed strategically, coincided with a 1–2 Ferrari finish in the Italian Grand Prix, a poignant tribute to the racing legend.

🏆 Honors:
Ferrari received numerous honors during his lifetime, including induction into the International Motorsports Hall of Fame (1994) and the Automotive Hall of Fame (2000).
